The City of Dublin is seeking suggestions for the name of the next neighborhood park, which will be constructed in the Schaefer Ranch development. Residents have until Thursday, April 12th to participate in an online survey to suggest park names.
The 10.6-acre site will feature 6.3-acres of developed parkland with open meadow, playgrounds, basketball court, tennis court, horseshoe pit, covered picnic area, game tables, pathways, and a restroom building.
After a series of delays, the construction of the new park by Schaefer Ranch’s controversial developer Seeno Construction Company is now expected to begin no later than June 30, 2012. The previous agreement required Seeno Construction Company to complete construction of the park once 200 building permits had been issued. The latest agreement sets the park construction completion date at June 30, 2013, but no completion date was included in the City’s press release soliciting help from residents on naming the new park.
The park site is at a high point in the western hills of Dublin with spectacular views of the Tri-Valley to the east and the rolling hills of the ridge line to the south. The site is bordered by Dublin Boulevard to the south, Schaefer Heights Road to the west, and Kelly Canyon Drive to the north.
The following general guidelines may be helpful in determining suggested names for the park. Parks are typically named using the following criteria:
- Neighborhood or geographical identification (development, major street or regional area of the City).
- A prominent form of topography, natural geological features, or a prominent plant, bush or tree.
- An outstanding or unique feature of the park
- Historical or cultural significance of the area.
- An individual or family that has provided significant, long-term contributions to the advancement of Dublin and the quality of life, demonstrating service and commitment to the community.
The new Schaefer Ranch development would not be possible without Measure M. Led by then Dublin Mayor Janet Lockhart and former Dublin Planning Commissioner Morgan King, Measure M was the compromise between the West Dublin political machine and the developers of the land that ultimately became Schaefer Ranch. That compromise provided a huge windfall for the owners of the Schaefer Ranch property at the expense of the Nielsen family, by placing anti-development and anti-farming restrictions on their west Dublin acreage.
The Nielsen family one of the early ranchers in Dublin to purchase large tracts of land before the post-World War II East Bay suburban population boom. Perhaps the new park in Schaefer Ranch should be named after the Nielsen family, whose parcel was rendered worthless by Measure M. Alternatively, the new park can named after Lockhart and King, the two politicians responsible for Measure M’s passage.
